Healing The Wounds: Turkey’s Quest For Inclusive Economic Growth

Turkey’s East and Southeast Anatolian regions, which are the most economically backward parts of the country, find themselves in a vicious cycle of terrorism and conflict plaguing the region and hindering economic development [1]. Economic problems and lack of opportunities, in turn, further fuel terrorism and conflict by marginalizing individuals. Assertive development plans and large amounts of funds and incentives channeled by the central government into the region have so far done little to create a better business environment that would create more employment opportunities. At the same time, the escalation of terror attacks and clashes between the Turkish security forces and terrorist groups, as well as the descent of the neighboring countries of Syria and Iraq into lethal chaos, have led to a worsening of the situation.
